|Under immediate supervision, performs entry-level civil engineering work in the design, construction, maintenance and operation of water reclamation plants and sewers. May supervise sub-professional personnel. |
|The following promotional requirements must be completed by the anticipation deadline. Possession of a bachelor's degree in an appropriate academic specialty. One year of service with the District as a Treatment Plant Operator I or Engineering Technician IV. Civil service status as a Treatment Plant Operator I or Engineering Technician IV; or civil service status as an Engineer Trainee. An appropriate academic speciality is interpreted to mean a degree in chemical, civil, electrical, environmental, mechanical, sanitary, or structural engineering from a four-year accredited college or university. A four-year accredited college or university is interpreted to mean accreditation by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Foreign-educated applicants must produce a satisfactory assessment of their academic qualifications by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). The NCEES assessment and any additional coursework used to correct deficiencies must be completed by the anticipation deadline. |
|The examination will consist of a written test weighted 90%, an efficiency rating weighted 5% and a seniority rating weighted 5%. The minimum passing score on the written test will be 70% unless determined otherwise by the Director of Human Resources. Candidates must achieve a passing score on each test to have their names placed on the eligible list.
The written test will assess candidates' knowledge, skill and ability in areas such as principles of civil engineering as applied to the design, construction, operation and maintenance of sewage treatment facilities, sewer collection systems and stormwater management including use of engineering formulas; engineering design principles including hydraulic, hydrologic and soil considerations; biological, bacteriological, microbiological and chemical design criteria for water treatment; reading and interpreting civil engineering designs, specifications and construction schedules; field surveys and computations including quantity take-off estimates and economic analysis; safety practices for the construction and wastewater industries;
computer applications and analysis software (i.e. Excel, AutoCad); and written and interpersonal communication.

The written test will be administered on Saturday, November 18, 2017 at the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences, 3857 West 111th Street, Chicago, IL.
Candidates should report at 9:00 a.m. with the approved admission letter and a driver's license or other form of photo identification. Texas Instrument-Model TI-30Xa scientific calculators will be provided. No books, study guides, cell phones, tablets, laptops or other aids will be allowed.
|Appointments will be made from an eligible list with three categories: A (Exceptionally Well Qualified), B (Well Qualified) and C (Qualified). Candidates in the highest category will be given first consideration for appointment. This examination is also being given on an Original Entrance basis. In instances where both Original Entrance and Promotional eligible lists result from an examination process, it is the District's practice to appoint only from the Promotional eligible list until all names from that list have been considered. The eligible list has a duration of one year.|
